Motorcycle lift table vs jack stand vs paddock stand

Published 13 September 2026. Prices and stock last checked 14 September 2026.

The short answer

Paddock stands usually cost the least and are the quickest way to lift one end of a bike, but need suitable mounting points. A jack stand lifts the whole bike a short way from underneath and packs away small. A lift table costs the most and takes the most floor space, but raises the bike to working height for long jobs. Many home mechanics start with paddock stands for everyday chain and tyre work and add a jack stand or a table later.

Who this suits

Home mechanics deciding which kind of lift to buy first.

Who it may not suit

Workshops choosing a commercial hoist.

Working height

Paddock stands lift a wheel just clear of the ground, so you still work crouched or kneeling. Jack stands lift the whole bike, usually a few hundred millimetres, which frees both wheels but does not bring the bike up to a comfortable standing height. A lift table is the only one of the three that raises the bike to around bench height, so it is the one to choose if you spend hours on the bike.

Floor space and storage

Paddock stands hang on a wall. A folded jack stand fits on a shelf. A lift table occupies a car-length strip of floor with its ramp and needs clear space on both sides, so measure before you buy.

What each lifts by

Paddock stands lift by the swingarm (via spools or pads) and the fork legs. Jack stands lift by a flat, solid point under the frame or engine. A lift table carries the bike on its wheels, clamped at the front and strapped down. If your bike has no spool mounts and an awkward swingarm, a jack stand or table avoids the question entirely.

What goes wrong with the wrong choice

A paddock stand with nowhere to locate cannot be used at all. A jack stand whose lowest height is above your ground clearance will not go under the bike. A lift table too short for your wheelbase leaves the rear wheel hanging off the platform. Each of these is a measurement you can take before buying.

Our view

There is no single best choice. For chain and tyre work on a road bike with spool mounts, paddock stands. For occasional full-bike jobs and storage, a jack stand. For frequent or long servicing with the room to spare, a lift table.
