Motorcycle lift weight capacity: how much do you need?
Published 13 September 2026. Prices and stock last checked 13 September 2026.
The short answer
Start with your bike's wet weight, meaning its weight with fuel, oil and coolant, which the owner's manual or the manufacturer's specifications give. Add anything fitted to it, such as luggage or crash bars. Then choose a lift whose stated capacity is comfortably above that total rather than just above it: a rated capacity is a maximum, not a working target, and a load near the limit leaves no margin if the bike sits off-centre.

Who this suits
Anyone comparing lifts and jack stands on capacity, or converting a pound rating to kilograms.
Who it may not suit
Anyone needing the capacity of a certified workshop hoist; check the documentation that comes with that equipment.
Dry weight and wet weight
Manufacturers often quote a dry weight, without fuel and fluids, because it is the smaller number. The weight a lift actually carries is the wet weight. Petrol weighs roughly three quarters of a kilogram per litre, so a full tank alone can add well over ten kilograms, before oil, coolant and anything bolted on.
Converting pounds to kilograms
Many lifts and jack stands are rated in pounds. One pound is 0.4536 kilograms, so 440 lb is about 200 kg, 1,000 lb is about 454 kg and 1,200 lb is about 544 kg. Where a listing gives both units and they disagree by more than rounding, treat it as a contradiction and check before relying on either.
Capacity is not the only figure that matters
A jack stand's lowest height has to fit under your bike, and its highest height decides how much working room you get. Its deck has to sit on a flat, solid part of the frame or engine. A table's platform length has to take your wheelbase, and its ramp decides how easily you can roll the bike on. Paddock stands are often rated per stand, with the front and rear stands each carrying only their end of the bike.
When a listing contradicts itself
Product listings are not always consistent. We have seen a lift whose title gave one capacity while its own specification table gave a different one. We do not quote a figure a listing contradicts, and we leave that product out of our recommendations until the listing is corrected.

How this page was put together
How this page is kept honest: the guidance is written by Placid Deals from general workshop practice and the stated specifications of the stands and lifts in our range. We have not tested these products. Figures for individual products come from their own listings, are re-read every day, and are left out whenever a listing contradicts itself.
